Buccaneers Waive Undrafted Rookie Linebacker Ahead Of Training Camp
USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed undrafted linebacker Jeremy Banks in May. The Buccaneers announced on Wednesday that they would be waiving him ahead of training camp.

Initially, the signing made sense. The team's star linebacker Devin White had requested a trade at the time, and they were bringing in training camp players to compete for a roster spot.

The one-time Pro Bowl linebacker remains on the squad and there is less need to fill the position with other areas to address on the roster.

Banks, a Tennessee product, led the school in tackles in 2021. He ended that season with 128 total tackles and also had the sixth most solo tackles in the SEC and the seventh most tackles in the country.

Banks finished his collegiate career with 18 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and three interceptions. He also deflected eight passes and forced one fumble.

The Buccaneers, who have an uncertain future following Tom Brady's retirement, have 27 rookies on the 90-man roster. Eight were picked up in the draft, meaning the additional 20 rookies brought in for camp were undrafted. Banks was the first of them to get cut.

Training camp is just now beginning to get underway, and it's possible that Banks will be able to find a new landing spot ahead of the preseason.

Fox Sports reported that the final roster spot was filled by Will Gholston, who was re-signed after spending each of his ten pro years with the Buccaneers.
