Sixers Get Hammered For Tiny Allen Iverson Statue, But Later Revealed To Be A Misunderstanding
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The unveiling of Allen Iverson's statue by the Philadelphia 76ers sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many expressing outrage and amusement at its perceived small size. However, the criticism stemmed from a misunderstanding, as the statue was actually consistent in size with those of other 76ers legends.

One fan called out the Sixers and said that the picture they used for the statue was from the movie, 'Like Mike.'

A second fan called out the Sixers for making the statue too tiny.

A third fan shared a meme where Allen Iverson looked like a giant next to his own statue.

A fourth fan shared a video of what Allen Iverson will do to the sculptor when he sees him.

Despite heavy backlash and criticism, it was later revealed to be a misunderstanding as to why his statue was so small.

Located on the Legends Walk in front of the team's training complex in Camden, Iverson's statue joins those of iconic figures such as Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain, and Julius Erving. All of these statues, including Iverson's, are of standard size, but the juxtaposition of Iverson's stature as a player with the size of his statue may have caused confusion.

The Philadelphia 76ers opted to build their Walk of Fame, which includes statues of their iconic players, outside their practice facility due to not owning the arena where they play their games.

This decision to locate the statues outside their practice facility ensured that they could create a cohesive and consistent display of their team's history in a space they controlled. Consequently, all the statues, including those of celebrated figures like Charles Barkley and Julius Erving, were designed to be the same size.

This approach likely aimed to maintain uniformity and symmetry within the display while also emphasizing the equal importance of each player's contribution to the team's legacy. While the decision may seem unconventional to those accustomed to statues being erected within stadium premises, it reflects a practical solution tailored to the 76ers' circumstances.

Therefore, the size of Allen Iverson's statue is not a reflection of his significance as a player but rather a result of the overarching design strategy for the Walk of Fame. Understanding the logistical considerations behind the placement and sizing of the statues provides valuable context and helps to dispel any misconceptions about the intentions behind the design choices made by the Philadelphia 76ers organization.

Despite the initial backlash, it's evident that Iverson's impact transcends the physical dimensions of his statue. His achievements on the court, including winning the NBA Rookie of the Year award and an MVP title, solidify his status as one of the greatest players in NBA history.

The statue, crafted by sculptor Chad Fisher, stands as a tribute to Iverson's legacy and serves as a permanent reminder of his indelible mark on the sport. As the 76ers continue to honor Iverson, his influence will be celebrated by fans, athletes, and artists alike for generations to come.

Allen Iverson Reacts To His Sixers Statue

Allen Iverson was deeply moved and honored by the unveiling of his statue outside the team's practice facility in Camden. The sculpture captures him in his trademark move, executing his famous crossover dribble, immortalizing a moment that defined his electrifying career.

At the unveiling ceremony, Iverson was visibly emotional as he expressed gratitude to everyone who played a role in his success, from his family and teammates to his mentors and coaches. He specifically highlighted the impact of hall-of-fame coach Larry Brown, acknowledging their shared vision for success and the pivotal role Brown played in shaping him into an MVP player.

Reflecting on his journey from being the first overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft to becoming a perennial All-Star and league MVP, Iverson expressed disbelief at the honor bestowed upon him. He described the moment as surreal, emphasizing his appreciation for the support and love shown by the people who gathered to celebrate the occasion.

Iverson's statue now stands alongside those of other Sixers legends on the Legends Walk at the training complex, symbolizing his enduring legacy within the franchise. The ceremony not only celebrated Iverson's individual achievements but also honored his contributions to the team's history and the game of basketball as a whole.
